Today is the six-year anniversary of Megxit, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared that they would be leaving their roles as working royals.

Their announcement sent shockwaves across the globe as royal observers watched with eagle-eyes to see what Megxit really meant for The Firm and the Sussexes.

Despite the major change in January 2020, the couple have still retained their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

This move has left many royal fans and critics rather confused.

The question on many people’s lips has been: “Why have they stepped away from the royals an spotlight whilst remaining firmly in the public eye as duke and duchess?”

This question, amongst many others, is one that Harry and Meghan have often faced.

And on one occasion, in 2023, whilst promoting his bombshell memoir, Spare, Prince Harry responded.

Prince Harry’s response to giving up his title

The Duke of Sussex bluntly hit back at the insinuation that he should give up his title.

He even brought into question one of the royal family’s strictest rules, one their own motto is based upon.

Following their step away from the royal fold, Harry and Meghan sat down with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.

In the interview, they alleged negative treatment they had endured from The Firm.

A couple of years after, Harry chatted with Anderson Cooper on US TV in early 2023, where he was directly asked why he was still the Duke of Sussex despite his issues with his royal relatives.

When asked why he hadn’t given up the title of Duke of Sussex, he responded: “And what difference would that make?”

Mr Cooper went on to ask: “One of the criticisms that you’ve received is that okay, fine, you wanna move to California, you wanna step back from the institutional role. Why be so public? Why reveal conversations you’ve had with your father or with your brother? You say you tried to do this privately.”

Prince Harry questioned the royal family’s motto

Here, Harry appeared to throw doubt on one of the rules the royals live by: “Never complain, never explain.”

He said: “And every single time I’ve tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife. You know, the family motto is ‘never complain, never explain’.

“But it’s just a motto. And it doesn’t really hold.”

Prince Harry’s security update

Although Prince Harry has remained duke, one thing he did lose out on was his automatic police protection in the UK. His security in the UK was downgraded when he quit duties and moved to the US.

A ruling, which is said to be in Harry’s favour, is set to be announced in the coming weeks, which is believed to see his tax-payer funded security restored whilst in the UK.

A source close to the Sussexes allegedly told the Mail On Sunday: “It’s now a formality. Sources at the Home Office have indicated that security is now nailed-on for Harry.”
