An unearthed letter has revealed the profound grief King Charles felt in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s shock death.
King Charles’ raw emotions over Princess Diana’s death have been revealed in a newly discovered secret handwritten letter.
The three-page letter by the then-Prince reveals his deep feelings of “unbearable emptiness” after the death of the mother of his children in 1997.
According to the Daily Mail, the heartfelt note, addressed to a Mr Peter Houghton recently fetched $2000 (AU$3000) at a US auction.
The letter revealed Mr Houghton was also dealing with his own grief, as the then-Prince of Wales wrote his heart “bleeds” for him after the loss of “dear Liz” to illness.
Charles empathised with Mr Houghton’s pain, expressing that he could “so well imagine the agony” he was enduring and wished he could “wave a magic wand and transform the situation”.
The letter delved into the King’s deep sense of “bewilderment and confusion” over losing someone so young as Princess Diana was only 36 when she was killed in a car accident.
It also offered a glimpse into the King’s Christian faith, referencing the afterlife and quoting a poignant Bible passage: “Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face”.
Penned on Highgrove House letterhead and dated December 8, 1997, it was signed simply “Charles”.
The original envelope, with instructions for it to be delivered “by hand”, added a personal touch to the emotional correspondence.

‘This lengthy handwritten letter to “Peter” expresses his sympathy upon the death of a loved one,” a spokesperson at RR Auction in Boston told The Daily Mail.
“Charles was likely particularly emotional at the time he wrote the letter, as Princess Diana had tragically passed away just a few months before in August 1997.”
The individual who sold the letter remains unknown.
King Charles and his second wife Queen Camilla are set to spend the coming weeks at Balmoral Castle alongside family.
The exclusive gathering will bring together Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their children, along with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and their children, as well as Queen Camilla’s children and grandchildren.
Noticeably absent from the guest list are former working royals Prince Harry and Meghan Markle which insiders say is a pointed omission as the family focuses on moving forward without them.
